Contship launches first fully electric port tractor at La Spezia Terminal
Contship Italia Group has introduced its first fully electric port tractor at La Spezia Container Terminal as part of its decarbonisation strategy and wider sustainability roadmap.
The electric vehicle will be operated by Hannibal for internal shuttle operations within the terminal. The pilot project aims to support the gradual electrification of LSCT’s quay tractor fleet and reduce Scope 1 emissions from port activities.
According to Contship, electric tractors are particularly suited to terminal operations because they can operate close to charging infrastructure while benefiting from regenerative braking during frequent stop-start movements.
The company added that the new unit will also reduce noise and vibrations, helping improve working conditions and operational efficiency.
The investment received co-financing through Italy’s “Green Ports PNRR” programme managed by the Port System Authority of the Eastern Ligurian Sea under the EU-backed Next Generation EU initiative.
Denise Sofia said the project supports the Group’s “Moves that Matter” sustainability strategy launched in 2025, which includes decarbonisation targets aligned with SBTi standards.
The initiative forms part of a broader innovation programme at the La Spezia terminal focused on digitalisation, infrastructure upgrades, and operational efficiency improvements.
