In mid-April, the Grande Tokyo, a new, ammonia-ready Pure Car & Truck Carrier (PCTC) was delivered in Shanghai to the Grimaldi Group.
As informed, it is the tenth vessel in the fleet designed to be “ammonia-ready,” meaning it could be converted in the future to run on ammonia fuel. The ship was built by Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Company Limited and China Shipbuilding Trading Company Limited, part of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, and is the last of seven similar vessels ordered.
It is designed to transport vehicles and other wheeled cargo, with a capacity of 9,241 cars (CEU). Some decks can also carry heavier cargo, up to 250 tons. The ship is named after Tokyo, reflecting the company’s operations connecting Japan with regions such as Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
The vessel is about 200 meters long and has a gross tonnage of around 77,500 tonnes. Its engine is designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions compared to older ships, and it can use shore power while in port. It has also received “Ammonia Ready” certification from RINA. Its first voyage is scheduled from Ningbo, China, to Brazil, carrying about 6,800 vehicles.
In 2022, Grimaldi Group ordered the construction of up to ten ammonia-ready pure car and truck carriers worth around $1bn, from China Merchants Heavy Industries Jiangsu shipyard. On 21 July, 2025, the first in a series of the ten next-generation PCTC vessels was named.
