Cargo vessel sinks in Aegean Sea
A cargo vessel carrying approximately 8,000 metric tonnes of soda, sank in the Aegean Sea after running aground in a rocky area north of Andros, according to local sources.
The vessel was sailing from Albania to Ukraine when it reportedly suffered severe damage after striking rocks, leading to its eventual sinking.
A total of nine crew members were on board, including eight Turkish nationals and one Azerbaijani national. All crew members were successfully rescued during a large-scale operation coordinated by the Hellenic Coast Guard.
Two seafarers were recovered from the sea by a Coast Guard patrol vessel, while the remaining seven were located and rescued from a difficult-to-access rocky area on Andros island.
The rescued crew members were safely transferred to the island’s port and were reported to be in good health.
The rescue operation involved four vessels from the Greek Coast Guard, three nearby commercial ships, a helicopter from the Greek Air Force and the passenger ferry Nissos Samos.
