Port of Brunswick the busiest auto terminal
The Port of Brunswick has maintained its position as the busiest automobile port in the United States for the second year running, handling 779,000 vehicle units and more than 53,000 units of heavy machinery in 2025, with 731 ship calls recorded during the calendar year.
The result was announced at the Georgia International Trade Conference, where state and port officials outlined an ambitious infrastructure investment programme designed to sustain and extend Brunswick’s national leadership in RoRo operations.
Georgia Ports President and CEO Griff Lynch articulated a vision for Brunswick as a world-class RoRo hub, highlighting the port’s combination of US market access, global connectivity, new berth construction, expanded on-terminal rail infrastructure and additional vehicle storage as delivering the broadest set of supply chain options available at any US port.
The fourth berth at Colonels Island, a US$ 100 million investment with an LOA capacity of 975 feet, is 30% complete with the final piling for the main dock driven in early April.
The berth is expected to open in November 2027, enabling faster vessel turnarounds and greater fleet optimisation for RoRo operators.
Georgia Ports Authority completed US$ 284 million in self-financed improvements at Brunswick during fiscal year 2025, including 350,000 square feet of covered on-dock storage, 330,000 square feet of covered space on the south side of Colonels Island and more than 160 acres of outdoor vehicle storage.
Colonels Island now spans 1,700 acres with a further 264 acres available for future expansion, offering more RoRo capacity than any other US port.
Phase I of the Southside Railyard, a US$ 22 million project, has been completed, doubling annual rail capacity from 175,000 to 370,000 vehicles.
Phase II will be completed in 2029, adding a further 250,000 units of annual capacity. Manufacturing growth across the US Southeast, driving demand for large machinery and specialised project shipments, is cited as a key factor underpinning investment planning.
Governor Brian Kemp and GPA Chairman Alec Poitevint both emphasised the port’s role as an economic engine for Georgia and expressed commitment to sustaining Brunswick’s leadership as the premier RoRo destination in the United States.
