Hapag-Lloyd adds new surcharge on South Europe feeder routes amid rising costs
Hapag-Lloyd has announced a new Emergency Operations Charge (EOO/EOD) for third-party feeder services across South Europe and surrounding regions, citing rising fuel and operating costs linked to geopolitical tensions.
The surcharge comes in addition to the existing Emergency Fuel Surcharge (EFS). The company said increased bunker costs from third-party feeder operators require a separate adjustment.
The new charge will apply as EOO at origin and EOD at destination. It will cover shipments to and from multiple ports across Southern Europe, North Africa, the Black Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean.
Most locations will see a surcharge of USD 50 per TEU. Some variations apply, including USD 60 per TEU for ports such as Lisbon, Bilbao and Gijón, and lower levels for selected ports such as Las Palmas (USD 30), Santa Cruz de Tenerife (USD 20) and Rades (USD 10).
The surcharge applies to all container types and will be payable by the sea freight payer.
Hapag-Lloyd confirmed that the measure reflects higher operating costs imposed by third-party feeder providers, as fuel prices remain elevated due to ongoing disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz situation.
The charge will take effect from May 8, 2026, for non-FMC regulated trades. For FMC-regulated trades, including US-related shipments, it will apply from May 27, 2026.
