Grimaldi Group adds ammonia-ready car carrier Grande Inghilterra
Grimaldi Group has named and taken delivery of the Grande Inghilterra in Shanghai. The vessel is the Group’s eleventh ammonia-ready car carrier.
China Merchants Heavy Industries Jiangsu built the ship. It will soon begin its maiden voyage to South America and Northern Europe.
The vessel follows earlier ships such as Grande Shanghai, Grande Svezia, and Grande Michigan. It offers high cargo capacity and lower environmental impact.
The ship has 14 decks and can carry up to 9,000 CEU. It transports both electric and conventional vehicles. It also handles rolling cargo such as trucks and machinery.
The Grande Inghilterra uses advanced green technologies. These include solar panels, lithium batteries, and cold ironing capability. Together, they cut fuel consumption by up to 50% compared to older vessels.
The name honors England, where the Group has operated for about 70 years. Today, it runs services linking UK ports with global markets.
Emanuele Grimaldi said: “We invest in advanced vessels to support the energy transition and deliver better services to our customers.”
The ship will depart from Taicang in China. It will carry 6,500 cars and additional rolling cargo. Its first stops include Suape in Brazil and Antwerp in Belgium.

Key Features
The vessel is 220 meters long and 38 meters wide. It has a gross tonnage of over 93,000 tonnes and a cruising speed of 18 knots.
It holds an Ammonia Ready certification from RINA. This allows future conversion to ammonia fuel.
The ship also meets high environmental and comfort standards. It carries Green Plus, Green Star 3, and comfort certifications.
It uses 5 MWh lithium batteries and can connect to shore power. These systems allow zero emissions while in port.
Additional technologies include:
- 2,500 m² of solar panels
- Air lubrication system to reduce drag
- Advanced hull coating and design
- Exhaust cleaning and NOx reduction systems
- Gate rudder for improved efficiency and maneuverability.
The vessel strengthens Grimaldi’s strategy to expand sustainable shipping and support global logistics.
