ClassNK grants first autonomous ship notation to container ship “Genbu”
ClassNK has awarded its “AUTO-Nav2 (All)” notation to the container ship Genbu, marking the world’s first certification of an autonomous navigation system for a vessel operating on medium- to long-distance routes.
The vessel was built by Kyokuyo Shipyard Corporation, managed by IKOUS Corporation, and operated by Suzuyo Marine Co., Ltd. It is part of the Nippon Foundation’s MEGURI2040 Fully Autonomous Ship Program.
Advancing autonomous shipping
The AUTO-Nav2 (All) notation confirms that the vessel’s autonomous navigation system meets ClassNK’s safety and performance standards. It also enables the ship to demonstrate the reliability of its technology to the wider industry.
ClassNK evaluated the system under its “Guidelines for Automated/Autonomous Operation of Ships,”. These guidelines define requirements across design, installation, and operational phases.
Supporting future maritime operations
Autonomous ship technology is gaining momentum globally, with a focus on improving safety, reducing human error, and easing crew workloads. In Japan, such vessels are also seen as key to maintaining shipping routes to remote islands and addressing workforce shortages due to an aging seafarer population.
Lastly, ClassNK said it will continue developing standards and certification frameworks to support the adoption of autonomous shipping and ensure safe, stable maritime operations.
